People
The faculty of the Economics Department is composed of approximately 40 full time members plus a number of affiliated faculty, many of whom are Wharton School faculty with secondary appointments in Economics, and approximately ten visitors who teach and conduct research in the Department each year.
The Faculty is highly diversified and conducts applied research on a wide range of topics and theoretical research on fundamental problems. The department is the editorial home of the International Economic Review while many faculty members are on the editorial boards of other journals.
The department has strong international connections, and each term welcomes visitors from a number of foreign countries. Penn places strong emphasis on excellence in research, and its location in the center of the northeast corridor gives easy access to visiting speakers from other departments.
The department is ranked among the top ten in the United States in terms of the research output of its faculty, and its seminar series is one of the most active in the world.
Penn is committed to maintaining this tradition of excellence both in research and in teaching. Its faculty have received numerous international awards, foremost among them the Nobel Prize in Economics awarded in 1980 to Professor Lawrence Klein.
