We are now done with the Math Camp. You can find the syllabus, problem sets, quizzes and solutions below. The solution to Quiz 2 is now posted. Please go over the solutions of both quizzes and make sure you are comfortable with the techniques employed. Do the same for the problem sets.

A note on quizzes: The quizzes were meant to do 3 things at once: Test your understanding of the material, give you some questions to think about, and teach you some new tricks by showing interesting applications. Therefore, some of the questions were not straightforward to solve. In every exam, though, I aimed to make at least 60% of the questions doable for those of you who have followed lectures, studied regularly and understood concepts. A grade lower than 50 would be indicative that you need to review the concepts. Grades higher than 75 would mean you are in a very good standing with respect to the material.

A note on the waiver: The waiver will be easier than the quizzes. Make sure you understand all the concepts/definitions and theorems. Understand why and when the theorems work, and why and when they don’t. Our aim in the math camp was twofold: i) Teach you how to construct proofs so you can communicate ideas in a formal and coherent way ii) Teach you some results that will be very useful during the first year.

The waiver will exactly test these two.

Finally, the content covered is by no means exhaustive; you will still need to learn new techniques to tackle economic problems. These are relegated to Econ 898 and the rest of first year classes.

Syllabus

Notes on Optimization

Handout on Concave Functions

Notes on Continuity of Correspondences and Berge’s Theorem (We will not cover this one; it is left for Econ 898. The notes are useful, so they will remain on my website.)

First problem set is below. You have to work in groups. I will call people to solve the problems on the board.

Problem Set 1 (due on Thursday)

Problem Set 2 (due on Wednesday)

The problem set below is not to be submitted. Work on them to practice for the waiver. I tried to choose questions with different difficulty levels. If you find some of the questions too hard, you can omit them. I expect the waiver to be “easy” on the probability part.

Problem Set 3 (not to be submitted)

We will have one quiz every Friday morning. Below is our first quiz with suggested solutions.
