Graduate Program Application Request

If you are applying for a fellowship, the deadline for completed applications is now December 15, 2009.

Please note that the only internal source of financial aid for first-year students is in the form of fellowships. No first-year student may be a TA or an RA. No additional financial aid form is necessary to be considered for these fellowships.

You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Because of the volume of applications received, the incoming class is often filled, and applications for Fall 2010 may not be considered if received after March 1, 2010.

The University requires applicants utilize Apply Yourself, a Web-based Electronic Application. This application is being accepted by many of Penn's Graduate Schools and has replaced the paper version. The advantages to using the on-line application are numerous. You may access your application any number of times until you submit the application to us, and once your application has been submitted, you yourself will be able to check its status and note the receipt of supporting documentation. Applicants can avoid costly long-distance calls. In Apply Yourself an applicant can down load all the required documents onto the system. Recommenders can download their recommendation letters themselves if you check off "on-line". Applicants may also download their personal statement. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has just revised the application requirement beginning this fall 2009. They will now accept a downloaded copy of your transcript(s) to your on-line application (offial or unofficial) for review purposes. You will only need to mail an official copy directly from your institute if you become accepted to our program. Upon acceptance into our program you must make arrangements to mail the transcripts directly to the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate Division, School of Arts and Sciences, 3401 Walnut Street, Suite 322A, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6228. Finally, a writing sample is not required, but if you wish to send a writing sample to add to your application, then please mail it separately to Kelly Quinn, Department of Economics, 3718 Locust Walk, 160 McNeil Building, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6297. We cannot accept a PDF or electronic copy of your writing sampl as we receive over 750 applications.

International Applicants

If you are not a U.S. citizen, or permanent resident, certain special instructions apply to you.

  • Applicants from outside the United States should use Apply Yourself (electronic application) to expedite the application process.
  • International applicants may pay the application fee by using a MasterCard or Visa credit card. You will see this option in the "ApplyYourself" on-line application. If an International student wishes to pay by check, then they must send an international postal money order as payment of the application fee. Checks drawn on a foreign bank will be returned and the processing of the application will be delayed. We regret that application fee waivers are not available.
  • Applicants who have or will obtain a degree from an English speaking or US college before entering our PhD program are not required to send in TOEFL test results with their application.
  • The Office of the Graduate Division of the School of Arts and Sciences will provide immigration forms for the necessary visas; students who have been accepted for admission need to contact the office if they do not receive these forms.
  • Upon application for admission, your name will be forwarded to the University's Office of International Programs in order that they can provide you with other information relevant to foreign students.

GRE and TOEFL scores

These scores are now received electronically from the testing services. Please use the following codes to identify you as a Penn applicant.

  • The Institution Code for the GRE is 2926. The Economics Department code is 1801.
  • The Institution Code for the TOEFL is 2926. The Economics Department code is 84. Use of the "department code" is no longer critical; we will be able to find your scores by your last name and birthdate.
