The faculty
of the Economics Department is composed of approximately 40 full
time members plus a number of affiliated
faculty, many of whom are Wharton School faculty with secondary
appointments in Economics, and approximately ten visitors
who teach and conduct research in the Department each year.
The Faculty is highly diversified and conducts applied research
on a wide range of topics and theoretical research on fundamental
problems. The department is the editorial home of the International
Economic Review while many faculty members are on the editorial
boards of other journals.
The department has strong international connections, and each term
welcomes visitors from a number of foreign countries. Penn places
strong emphasis on excellence in research, and its location in the
center of the northeast corridor gives easy access to visiting speakers
from other departments.
The department is ranked among the top ten in the United States
in terms of the research output of its faculty, and its seminar
series is one of the most active in the world.
Penn is committed to maintaining this tradition of excellence both
in research and in teaching. Its faculty have received numerous
international awards, foremost among them the Nobel Prize in Economics
awarded in 1980 to Professor Lawrence Klein.
